The Role of the TendonPro DSS in Breeding
Breeding places unique physical demands on both stallions and mares, often leading to increased strain on soft tissue structures, particularly in the hind limbs. The TendonPro DSS is a valuable tool in supporting the rehabilitation and maintenance of soft tissue health in breeding horses. By delivering targeted dynamic support, the DSS can help manage inflammation, encourage healing, and provide stabilisation during recovery, allowing breeding animals to remain more sound, more comfortable, and more productive throughout the season.
Fetlock laxity in foals is a common condition where weak soft tissues cause the fetlocks to drop, leading the foal to walk on its heels with toes lifted. This often affects both limbs unevenly. Mild cases usually resolve with controlled exercise, while more severe cases may need support like bandaging or splinting under veterinary guidance.
In foals, the TendonPro DSS can provide support for dropped fetlocks and has been observed to assist in improving certain angular limb deformities. Any subluxations in the joint should be carefully managed under veterinary supervision. The TendonPro can also be used as an alternative to the “red boot emergency compression boot” in these cases
Pregnancy in mares can increase the risk of musculoskeletal injuries, particularly to the suspensory ligament, especially in the hind limbs. The added weight of the foal and uterus, along with hormonal changes, places increased strain on the limbs, making heavily pregnant mares more vulnerable. Proximal (high) suspensory tears are of particular concern and may involve associated bone damage or microfractures. Mares with excessive hind limb extension during movement are especially predisposed. In addition to suspensory injuries, pregnancy-related conditions such as prepubic tendon rupture and mammary suspensory ligament strain may also occur, requiring close monitoring and supportive care.

Some brood mares suffer from DSLD-type degenerative conditions that can cause dropped fetlocks, particularly in the last trimester of pregnancy when hormonal changes loosen the ligaments. This can make movement uncomfortable or painful. Wearing one or two DSS devices on the affected hind limb(s) can improve comfort significantly. Longer term use through the breeding seasons has, in some cases, led to permanent or semi-permanent improvement, with similar results observed in horses diagnosed with DSLD.
Additionally, if a brood mare sustains an injury before or during pregnancy, the DSS can help support the limb and improve comfort during recovery.
Stallions often experience soft tissue injuries during breeding, particularly in the hind limbs, due to the significant weight and force placed on these structures while covering mares. The act of mounting can strain the suspensory ligaments, tendons, and muscles of the hindquarters, especially if footing is poor or if the stallion lacks adequate fitness. Repeated strain without proper recovery can lead to inflammation, lameness, or more serious injuries requiring rest and treatment. The DSS has been used to support the suspensory apparatus of the hind limbs during covering, with two devices typically worn at a medium support level.
For stallions with pre-existing forelimb issues, the device can also be used for protection during dismounting to provide extra stability and reduce strain.
The use of the TendonPro DSS in breeding highlights its growing applications, not only as a rehabilitation aid but also as a supportive tool for maintaining long-term health in mares and stallions. By reducing strain on the suspensory apparatus and other soft tissues, and providing additional comfort during periods of increased physical demand, the device contributes to improved welfare and overall breeding success. Its application in managing conditions such as DSLD and pregnancy-related ligament laxity demonstrates how practical innovation can make a measurable difference in equine reproduction. As more breeders integrate the TendonPro into their management strategies, it has the potential to become a standard component of responsible, welfare-focused breeding practices.
